Scribe – Back Door Porky

I arrived at the meeting point at Choi Ha Road at 7pm. DogShit and South Side Hash Toy gave the briefing, mentioned something about dogs (I was on the periphery), and off we set toward Jordan Valley Park, which was built on the site of the former Jordan Valley Landfill that closed in 1990.

It was a gentle start, wandering through Jordan Valley Playground, up toward the Water Pumping Station and on to the Former Jordan Valley Reservoir Main Dam. The pack largely stayed together as we meandered the hillside following the directions. At this point, those out front encountered a reverse LSW arrow; was this an accident by the hares, deliberate sabotage, or had we morphed onto another part of the trail?! The majority of runners did an about turn to seek fresh direction and find the missed arrow. Octo, Jonathan 2.0, Bryn, and I chose to continue in the wrong direction, until we came across Clean My Bush, as he returned from a 500m detour that took him to the point where the W and R rejoined. We concluded we’d stumbled onto the return part of the trail. We all turned back to find true trail and chase down the rest of the pack.

We headed along New Clear Water Bay Road, traversed Clear Water Bay Road, not entirely sure what to expect next. Those at the front headed up the trail and past the first check at the pylon. On through the shiggy and up to a wall of rock accompanied by several ropes to guide the way. This was so much fun! I climbed up to an LSW marking with a left turn, only to look ahead and see Pipe Rider, Toilet Boy, Mamee’s Boy, and Freebie who had ascended quite a way further up the rest of the ravine ahead. They came back down and joined true trail.

We ascended around 130m in a short space of time, using ropes to climb up, down and traverse huge boulders and rock formations. There were a few scratches along the way and the occasional ‘yelp!’, Long Haul Bootie Call almost lost her phone to nature. This was a hash that I’m not going to forget! A lot of fun! Fortunately, I’d read a note somewhere about bringing gloves and was well prepared!

By this point, the pack was well and truly spread-out, and I, towards the back benefitted from markings laid by those toward the front. The thought of dogs toward the road led a few of us to grab sticks as we descended the mountain, however the dogs seemed to have lost interest by the time we arrived, giving us a brief stare and wandering off rather than the expected cacophony of sound!

At this point I was ready for a soda water, and thought I must have been close to the finish as several of us ran along New Clear Water Bay Road. However, the hares had other ideas, sending us back up and over Jordan Valley Park, this time running with the direction of the arrows we’d encountered at the start. This trail was far more fun than leg day at the gym! ON-ON towards home, I entered the park shortly before the circle at 9.15pm. 3 runners were still on trail, with Jonathan 2.0 and Bryn appearing shortly after to everyone’s relief, otherwise the hares were heading out to find them.

All in all, an excellent run. A great adventure and a new trail for me! It’s one to remember, thank you DogShit and South Side Hash Toy.
