Write-up - Octo

It was a cool crisp evening with clear skies and I was eagerly anticipating this Birthday run from Cute Boar Butt from Tsuen Wan West because I know there are some beautiful trails there. We were so happy to see our visa run visitor Shwafflaar (I still can’t spell his hash name) even if it was not to run but just to say hi after 3 years and to tell us how much he missed us and LSW (the best hash ever) we also hope to see him again in the not too far distance.

An eager group gathered and we were told something about the trail being 6kms that there’s only one trail and if you see a Rambos wimps split you’ve messed up because that’s an abandoned trail that almost killed the hare's co-hare Pepper the dog. But being high on the cooler weather we didn’t really pay enough detail to this notice and off we ran.

I having set trails in this area before quite easily guessed the way. Quite quickly moving to the front and enjoying my FRB status for a while. Then at a check going up into the shiggy towards Ha Fa Shan I heard Pipe Rider call out and so I waited for her. She was calling out not for me to wait but because her clothing was filled with grass seeds! The unfortunate time of germination has arrived. But thankfully we were on our way up to the Yuen Tsuen Ancient trails and were seeing magnificent views of Kowloon and HK all the way up. This distracted us from the grass seeds.

Then we were caught up by CUTR at the ancient trail and I knew it must go up Ha Fa Shan, one of my favourite Kowloon view spots which I’d also discovered after going on a hash years ago by LIS. So we went up there and we all couldnt help ourselves to take selfies in groups and individually as the views were breathtaking. Even the camera shy CUTR couldn’t help himself to have a photo taken.

The trail then wound around the rock and as I knew the way I intuitively went to the left and down the mountain and there we saw trail. It went down until it took a very sharp right and I did start to doubt it as it went into very thick shiggy and I remembered that there was some incorrect trail out there. But not seeing any other trail we went onto the shiggy and indeed it was trail. The trail then went down past graves until it hit the catchwater. Then somehow it wound down to Tsuen Wan area and Pipe Rider confidently ran ahead to lead me back to Tsuen Wan West as she’d lived in the area before. We were back at around 9ish and actually the trail was more like 8km.

After a few mins SST and Duty Free arrived back in. Then we get a phone call from Freebee they were still in the mountain near Ha Fa Shan lost as they’d followed the Rambos wimps trail that was abandoned by the hare. Though we could have gone back up there to rescue them we couldn’t be bothered and decided to just send them the map and wait around. In the meantime we cut the delicious carrot cake made by Indy which was a pure sugar rush with a rich icing recipe (from the days before the hare was born when people cared little about the affect of sugar on health) with m&ms on top to really push everyone over the sweet limit.

As we waited we talked about spying and Indy’s military wife days and how we need to give Duty Free a better name. Maybe something more intriguing like James Bond but then Indy would need to be the Bond girl naturally! The others had not returned and Pipe Rider, Duty Free and SST had to leave. Feeling assured that there was definitely no Novichok in the cake, both SST and Duty Free took some cake home (as hashers are really not important enough to warrant being gotten rid of)

Finally the lost group came back after trying every hiking app then taking a taxi at the road. It was definitely an epic experience for them but they did see the symphony of lights on Ha Fa Shan and everybody was a good sport and enjoyed whinging, complaining and celebrating over cake, pizza, soda and beer as LSWers do best.

Octo’s DDs:

Hare - how can she set this run as an arachnophobe when Octo ran through 4 spider webs on trail!

Indy - for finding a weird lighter that only burn ladies (Pipe Rider and SST) fingers but not men (Duty Free).

Indy - for using an icing recipe that’s older than the hare

Walkers still lost on trail - not knowing how to use the hiking apps

Pipe Rider - in absentia for being shorter than the shiggy and getting grass seeds in her shorts

Duty Free in absentia - for not thinking hashers are important enough to be spied upon.

Indy - for thinking that she’s a better spy than Duty Free

Hare - congrats for the initiation of messing up a run. We’ve all done it before and it’s part of the haring journey. As long as nobody died and everybody gets back eventually. It goes down in LSW history.

Hare - for setting her 6th run this year well done! Almost volunteering for her 7th run in a few weeks time but concerned what people would think after this run. But she’s humble and taking notes on how to improve in the future. Thanks for a memorable run and always being willing to help out with haring!
