Write-up - Octopussy

6:30 group start was the advertised start time with virgin shiggy in Wanchai! I was curious and excited because I knew that the start was also at the Morrison Hill playground which is located next to the aptly named Queen Elizabeth Stadium with some of the best public showers in HK so I could finish the run and look like a Queen when I finished.

Anyway sadly couldn't get out of work on time so was late but thankfully Sticky and Macau Drunk were also late and we could run together. The run briefing was rather typical except for mentioning about electric wires that we needed to watch out for. Hopeless had kindly warned everybody and said that on the trail he would also mark them clearly in case people had never seen them and tried to touch them. Sounds interesting already if not very dangerous...

Anyway we ran and the first loop was the skate park in the playground and the three of us felt like cyclists at the olympics going on the higher slope at a 45 degree angle to get more speed but no overtaking there...

Next we ran towards Happy Valley and past the cemetery and up up up past some interesting Chinese old buildings towards the glamorous jockey club headquarters. Though Sticky casually said she'd been and dined there like a Queen, I felt like a pauper as I had never even been invited to walk around the outside of these buildings.. such is the life of the HK royalty. So this was the first virgin trail for me. Next we did a hairpin turn and down past the new jockey club into what looked like a dead end except for the hole in the fence. We crawled through this hole into the next virgin shiggy... a sloped wall of concrete and vines... Ruggero tried to go up the slope however Sticky and I saw the civilised stairs on the left and up we went. Ruggero gave up trying to be Tarzan and came to the stairs too.

Then we went over a few pipes and onto more service stairs until it reached the took a peak at the manicured rooftops of the upper class and then went up until we reached the Green Lane area and we took the service stairs up to Tai Hang Road. Then ran towards Bowen Road.

We went onto Bowen and then surprisingly down some service stairs. There we reached the Green waterworks and the next virgin shiggy! I was so upset as I wanted to claim this virgin shiggy and reccie it and indeed I'd thought about doing it twice this year but didn't make time for it... but I did give all koudos to Hopeless for actually recceing and setting trail... as indeed it was a treacherous trail. Not that the path was difficult... in fact it was quite walkable concrete edges and drain... though one could choose to straddle the drain or go into the sludge in the drain... but the electric fence surrounded the whole compound and at many points one was sooo tempted to put a hand on the fence to stabilise oneself... going around the fence I was half expecting to see some electrocuted hashers as we just can't underestimate the stupidity of hashers racing each other...

Anyway safely around we reached the end and onto safe Stubbs road and a nice run back to A passing Queens Road East as a nod to the Queen.

Thanks to Hopeless for another creative and interesting trail!
