30 years of hashing for Hopeless, not a small achievement, and the pack size reflected this with a good turn-out despite the rain and the uninspiring start location. The hare explained the markings and that he had re-laid part of the trail as if hashers actually pay attention to the markings ....

First challenge, to get out of the park. A wide hedge cut off the most obvious way, though it was not obstacle enough to Cums Up the Rear who decided to lead the pack, possibly in a vain hope to have his hash name changed. As the rest of us navigated our way around to the park exit and up Grieg Road, I mentioned to Lost in Translation that CUTR was calling trail as usual. Luckily others were more community-minded. Up at the check, I noted LIT committing to the underpass that would take her towards the Quarry Bay Tree Walk. Deciding that as this is her first run in a while (and for someone who has been out of action for so long and is still in need of repair work, LIT spent an awful lot of the hash front running showing up the rest of us) Hopeless may have given her insider information, I followed and was consequently unsurprised to find trail.

Passing an 'on on' the trail continued on the path up some steps. I felt the likelihood of a CB and tried to convince Winky Twinky to run on ahead and find it. He was not falling for that and so the CB was mine to find. Back down and on to the concrete drainage ditch. R1 went over the drain, W1 up to the left. I dislike jumping over that ditch in the dry and so decided not to even attempt it in the wet. W1 it was. Along with a good proportion of the pack. After a short chat with Timbits and Tight Lips, I caught up with Blow My T!ts and LIT at an open check. BMT had already chosen to go up the hill so, like a good hasher, I chose the other direction into the woods, letting LIT stay at the check and rest for a bit.

This was a poor decision. Due to the rain, the first flour found had no indication that it was W2. Whilst I might have made it up the steps as fast as someone else going along the flat, this is not generally true, so I found the first flour before BMT found any indication that trail, notably R2, went up the steps. Not being aware we were at the open check for R2/W2 split, we simply followed each other, lemming-like. By the time there was any indication that it was W2, spotted by LIT, most of us felt over-committed to W2 and not particularly like trudging back to go the other way. Others simply claimed they could not decipher the Scottish accent and defaulted to simply agreeing with LIT and carrying on in the direction where there were definitely trail markings. Ah well, there's a whole Rambo loop for another time.

Trail contoured around for a bit before dropping down some steps to Shau Kei Wan Service Reservoir Playground. Over the railings was the next challenge. Or next challenge for me as all the long-legged ones hopped over as if the fence was not there while I got stranded sitting on top of it. Down some metal steps then down to Yiu Hing Road. A check. Most people opted for a right, figuring it must go away from the start. CUTR chose left, back in the direction of A. Thankfully LIT was right behind him and able to call 'on on' as CUTR decided it was time to put some distance between him and the pack and neglected to mention that he had seen trail. This behaviour simply encouraged others to start racing. Never a good idea on the hash. CUTR, Dame Invader and possibly one or two others went zooming down the road and straight through a check back. PCT has never been happier for being a slow b@stard as he was able to take advantage of my having spotted the CB and turned around before he had got too far from the last 'on on'. True trail went past an IKEA pick up point and then down down down down down some stairs. There was a comment about carrying on to the bottom which WT wilfully misheard as me complimenting his bottom. Just as we were beginning to suffer from nauseous dizziness we reached the bottom of the steps and exited on to.... Yiu Hing Road.

The pack sped up again with the usual suspects chancing death by crossing roads in front of speeding cars and vans to say nothing of running along King's Road rather than the pavement simply to avoid one or two people. This type of raceist behaviour led at least Willy Stripper to miss the final W/R split. Surprisingly, he decided to actually go back and do R3 once he realised he was on W3. A small amount of height gain and a slight difference in length meant the first ones in were the wimps - BMT and LIT. Both injured. Proving that hashing is about using your head as much as your legs! Drinking back at A, there was some suggestion that perhaps O'Bollox had done R2 as Crackpot appeared to have finished well before him. But no, R2 remained unsullied all evening.

A fun, runnable trail, shame we missed a bit! On on!
