This week's run began with a "warm-up" hike of about a kilometer from the MTR station to the usual Hang Hau starting point with its "lovely" vista across the minibus and truck parking lot. Markings to the start were somewhat haphazard. Maybe a test? An attempt to weed out the true hashers? Evolutionary biology at its best? A pack of about 20 formed, but who knows how many others were lost in the labyrinthine cycle trails and underpasses that stood between the trains and A?

It was nice to see some returnees in attendance, in particular the Parkies, and our friends Scrubber and Goanna from Australia, passing through on their way to other adventures in Asia.

What would have been a fairly normal briefing was disrupted as the pack moved to allow a car to drive directly through it, en route to the carpark behind A! Checks? Yes. Check-backs? Yes. Chalk? Yes. Pink ribbons in the Rambo shiggy? Yes. Total distance? Who knows. Confident statement by Hopeless that we would be back in one hour exactly? Yes.

Having absorbed all this information, the pack confidently set off past the outdoor diners, through a couple of housing estates, and on to a check on the corner of Po Ning Road and Po Ning Lane. And into chaos...

Hashers running this way, hashers running that way, across roads, down into subways, cries of "has anyone found trail", "has anyone checked that way", "has anyone been over there", "was that a call?", with the usual sense of disorganization only a true hash pack can attain. One of those times when one is truly proud to be a LSW hasher! Eventually an actual "on-on" was called (as opposed to the 'fake news' variety referred to above and related confusion), and the pack made its way out through some smaller trails to Hang Hau Road.

From there, a hop, skip and a jump up to Clear Water Bay Road, a poorly-marked check by those who had gone before (grrrr...), through a small shiggyish path behind Silverstrand Beach, and up to a check on Silverstrand Beach Road.

Here the Wimps had been clearly marked to the right, and Rambos equally clearly marked to the left. Simple, one might think? But no, despite the clear, "Rambos is this way" marking, hashers were up the road, across the road, checking various small staircases and maintenance paths that led up into the undergrowth. After a few minutes, trail was found, up up and along the waterways, then into some dense shiggy. Obviously Hopeless was adhering to the "clearly one person at some point has gone this way, so it's a path" philosophy, as we barged our way through chest-high foliage, pink ribbon leading us like the Star of Bethlehem to our destination. Then we discovered that was just the easy bit. A descent through the trees tested the skills of even the most agile hashers, with the undergrowth getting denser and denser until, even the intrepid CFF had to admit the drain with arrows pointing along it was completely impenetrable. Not to be beaten, the pack, hearing traffic that sounded like it was no more than a few metres away, searched around, and found an alternative trail leading back out onto Silverstrand Beach Road/Silver Crest Road.

From there, a more straightforward route took the pack up, over and back down to A, with the front runner coming in at 56 minutes. So the hare's one hour prediction (instruction?) was pretty much bang-on. A nice run on a very pleasant evening, well done the hare!
