Our hare volunteered to set tonight’s run as she “has some spare time”, and seemingly had (for the 2nd time in a row) actually recce’d a trail. Once again, a published A to B, starting out from the Ocean Park MTR station, and B was a secret, “be back by 9pm so you can enjoy a swim at the pool”.

So I automatically assumed the Aberdeen Boat Club, and, having spent 2 hours and 3 drinks each in The Optimist, my daughter, Rhiannon, and Lost In Translation, advised me “we’ll take one for the team, help the hare with bags and drinks, and have that early swim”.

The returning Thermal Dick, when asked in the showers what he thought of the run later, his abridged version of the response was “I wish I’d done that”.

Julie advised the pack she ran out of chalk setting trail, and if in doubt “follow the pipes”…. Odd instructions indeed. In fact it was brown pipes and intense shiggy up, and black pipes and broken paths on the way down.

Shorthorn charged out the starting blocks from the taxi rank, waving his finger to all behind “I’m the FRB mother*ckers!”…. which lasted precisely to the first corner by The HK Club, where Breon flew past, heading left towards the Aberdeen Tunnel. A series of Checks, with a CB off one of them, resulted in Hopeless leading going into the dense, jaggy, broken shiggy up to the counter path up above Wong Chuk Hang. This terrain made for very slow progress and a lot of yelling as people’s skin and vests were ripped apart by the forbidding plant life.

Finally coming out onto the contour trail an catchwater, some confusion…. I went off and found arrows to the left, and more arrows with a “W” on, same style as the others on trail tonight, only to get to an arrow with W/T on it. WTF? It seems the secret cohare (Ivana Nucock) may have been marking a trail, gave up, or ran out of chalk, or got fed up, and scratched that part of trail. Well, I was so far along I went to the end of the catchwater, believing the hare was going to take us down the other intense shiggy back to ABC. But … no, I didn’t pick up trail again until the swimming pool in Shum Wan.

Seems the trail went to the reservoir, the usual dam crossing, then the pipes down to the Aberdeen Squash & Tennis Centre, and then onto the ABC. By the time I got back off my 5km shiggyfest * 2 trail, Breon, Poledancer and CUTE were already basking in the pool’s warmth, while the hare was enjoying some white wine with LIT & Rhiannon.

The pack can in by dribs and drabs, with Freewheel “out there somewhere”. Suddenly a phone call to LIT… he’d missed the turn down to the pipes, was at the Country Park barrier and wanted to know where the hell to go. I was keen to tell him, but, instead, advised his to run down the road and get a taxi to the club. He duly turned up 20 minutes later.

Interesting trail, 7,5km or so for the single original trail, thanks to the hare, in particular for the great venue and food!
