It’s always nice to have a hare set a run near where they reside. Pride in your community, ease of commute to A etc. I must say having been a 12 year resident of To Kwa Wan, I have never ever considered actually setting a run there. But Hasher Jonathan was willing to take the challenge on. And good on him, a great and educational evening out for the pack on a warm To Kwa Wan evening. The first challenge is getting to the start. Hashers have now found out just how long a commute can be for Hong Kongers to get from an MTR train to an actual MTR exit. I believe about 20 min. Via escalator after escalator and elevator and stairs, hashers made their way from the train to A high atop of hill #12. It was a enough to wind up Gary Glitter who was beside himself how it could possibly take so long to get to A from the MTR. Hill number #12 is in beautiful Ho Man Tin. A place a bit off the radar for most hashers. So far off the radar that hashers went to other Tins such as Lam Tin. Not to be deterred, Jonathon and lovely co-hare Camel Driver give us the briefing for the evenings hash. Poor Gary Glitter is fidgeting with his new top of the line Garmin GPS watch which he can’t figure out how to make work. In the briefing we learn what technical means “hang on for dear life”, that there is a beach in To Kwa Wan “Really” and that a special “Indy” trail was thought better of and Tee’d off. We do not learn what a circle with an X through it means. So off we go on a mostly urban trail. Off of Hill #12 we make our way around various playgrounds and gardens to Quarry Hill and the “Ho Man Tin” High level Salt Water Reservoirs. Here the hares show great creativity in what I call a labyrinth meeting a roller coaster. On the hill going up to the reservoir we go up, down over more up more down amongst every catch water and small steps along the side of the hill. At one point I heard the front runners yelling on up below me as I was also headed up. The whole thing ended in one huge climactic down on a concrete slope with tiny steps and a hand rail. Hold on tight or you will make the front page of the SCMP and not in a good way. After our near death experience we end up in very urban To Kwa Wan. On past it’s soon to open MTR station. Past the Jockey Club where 50 filthy men sit reading the racing form every one with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth, past the one room brothels and dodgy massage joints and to the split. I’m all for new experiences but a beach in To Kwa Wan isn’t one of them. With the hares fretting over the possibility of high tide and the possibility of medical waste and heroin needles, I safely stick to the W trail where Gary Glitter shows off his new signature GG on-on and I reach a circle with an X in it. Hmmm I played along for a bit looking for trail but gave up instead using my local knowledge to take me back to A. I missed the shopping centre which I found out was one of the highlights. Great trail hares!!

Of course being a hare isn’t just about setting the trail, you can set the greatest trail ever and have the evening fall apart over the on-on etc. Poor Jonathon saw his evening screeching for disaster when non-runner Indy had no soda water to mix with her vodka. But wait “I bought 12”. Oh but I drank 4 myself. Much time spent trying to account for the other 7 with Indy standing guard over the 8th. It caused us to reminisce over other softies that used to be in high demand but have since fallen out of favour such as Grapefruit Soda and that Vitamin C drink. We were able to actually get to the on-on on time as Octo finished her shower in under 30 minutes having skipped the hair conditioner. Comes Up The Rear starts as we leave for the on-on and conveniently finishes 30 seconds after everyone pays for dinner feasting on the leftovers that Octo has set aside. On-Ons by Indy.....
