Mei Foo

With a mild hangover from the Ladies Hash the night before, I arrived at Mei Foo station exit to find Rami waiting for me.

Rami, a Hash virgin and Fresh of the Boat from Boston was keen and eager, impressed with the wonderful Hong Kong parks. He’s yet to get lost in one at the end of a run when you are desperate for a beer.

He asked where the run started. I said I had no idea and we started searching for arrows. He couldn’t believe it but we quickly picked up trail and made it to the park where the usual suspects were slowly congregating like a flash mob. “There’s hot showers!” was the battle cry as we all poured sweat standing still and waited for the rain that threatened.

Rooted called us together. “Listen up. Closed arrows, closed checks tonight. On On and LSW mark true trail.” Up to the T and checkback then climb the hill so high high high. Sorry I’m getting ahead of myself.

“Rambos is more interesting. A bit of shiggy. Oh and watch out for the snakes, monkeys and stray dogs”. At least there were no crazy villagers like the night before.

With “a bit of shiggy” ringing in my ears we weft the park and I was hoping it would be a good introduction to Hashing for Rami. With a quick check at the park exit, over the bridge and we’re on to Lai King Hill Rd and settling into our natural pace. As usual I’m struggling to keep up with Lost in Translation while trying to play it totally cool in front of Rami as I pointed out trail markings. He quickly got into the spirit, loudly shouting “trail” at bewildered and slightly annoyed locals who were walking home.

The road got noisy and Lost in Translation, true to form from the night before, got the check wrong and couldn’t hear Screw Top calling on on. Once the swearing stopped we were back on trail and ploughing up hill again.

Lai Cho Road took us up and up and still no shiggy or anything other than roads. Rami was keeping up with Pole Dancer and Lost in Translation much better than I was and having a great conversation as I dropped further out of ear shot.

Luckily the lift brought us back together and we swapped names. Out of the lift, almost killed crossing the road while trying to solve a check and we’re back on trail and at last a path other than road. Still no split. Now we’re into villages and dogs.

At this point we thought we’d missed the split and running home on Wimps. No sooner uttered than the split was in front of us. LIT had a conference call so she took off on Wimps with a smile and I boldly launched onto mud with Rami close behind. Well, close for about 2m until the trail disappeared into a flour covered mudslide. “What is this? I can’t believe it! This is crazy!” called Rami from behind. Shiggilicious.

The shiggy was generally well marked but I still took a few wrong turns. Past graves, crawling under tetanus fences and along long abandoned and overgrown paths. It felt like a long-forgotten fun park in places. It was a real baptism of fire. I was so happy! Great job Rooted.

The shiggy was unrelenting and eventually took us to what looked like a huge reservoir spillway. We had to jump a couple of fences the government would have preferred we didn’t and then back on road.

It seemed like an easy on home until 1) I took a wrong turn and ended up in a dead end where a couple of kids either wanted to sell me drugs or buy some off me. I would have though most dealers don’t have high-lumen headlamps, but I might be behind the times. 2) we got lost in the wonderful Hong Kong park when I was desperate for a beer. Thankfully a topless Pole Dancer was marking trail back to the start and to the beer.

Great run Rooted and a great introduction to hashing for Rami. Hot shower and onto the bash with down downs by Indy.
