Lam Tin

Hare - Hopeless
Write-up - Malcolm in the Middle

Jonathan (returnee, my work colleague) said he’d like to run this week. “Lam Tin” I said, “I think it’s near here?”. We investigated further, surprised to find that our firm runs a free coach at 6.10pm to Lam Tim MTR ! Perfect!

So there we were, two Gwei Lo’s in their hash kit on a bus with 30 insurance agents in their office attire. We blended right in, demonstrating our immense local knowledge by asking “Are we there yet ?” when the bus stopped. The young lady in front of us pointed out the window to a sign that said “Lam Tin MTR”. We quietly got off the bus and headed to the entrance.

Up 4 escalators and follow the arrows were the instructions. So off we went, up three sets of escalators, ignoring the chalk closed arrows (even commenting on them) and up the fourth escalator to find .. no trail. Mmm .. sheepishly realising it must be 4 escalators from the train but 3 from the road we went back down and followed the trail to A, promising to never say a word to anyone ..

Despite this, I was early for once! Not so Burning Lust, who came running into A unbuttoning his shirt James Bond style as he called out “Just made it!”. While we were waiting for the public strip tease to end, I packed my things and realised I’d left my running belt behind. Damn, I like to carry my phone and some money just in case. Often the “On home” markings assume some local knowledge or sense of direction that I haven’t yet acquired. “Don’t worry”, says the Hare, “Where you’re going there won’t be any taxis and it’s the best marked trail this week!”. Hopeless starts the briefing, no W-R split .. open checks .. just under 7km .. you should finish in an hour. Yeh! Sounds like my kind of run!

So off we go, a very late Wai Chee Kok running into A as we all run out. Up the stairs, out of breath already and into the sports ground where I see most hashers are off left going around the field with BL shortcutting right and Gary “playing with the boys”. To be fair, he was short cutting through their football game .. and they were running circles around his mock tackles.

Out the field and up the path to Lin Tak Road. Heavy breathing behind me .. “Is that you Wai Chee”, I pant. “Wow, how you know? I must be unfit” comes the response and I don’t see Wai Chee again that evening.

I focus on trying to keep Gary and Octo in my sights. We run over a bridge and hang right onto trail. They fade into the distance and soon I’m all alone. First check .. not marked. Grr. I decide to head up into the trees and along the drain. Bad choice. Back to the check and go around the corner to complete the first 2km as we enter the village. The village really confused me. I though the hare would lead us left or right through the back streets, I was worried about getting lost with no phone/money and slowed down.

In fact, even though I managed to find several back streets and driveways to explore, the trail led through the village and out (briefly) to the Wilson Trail. The trail was a bit of a blur. I remember crossing a bridge over a stream and also a wider river bed that might have fed the reservoir. All the checks are marked and I jog around the trail, past the sitting out area that was locked and down around the back of the basketball court. A little bit of personal disappointment when I realise that the noise from the court is kids and it’s not the hash. Continue to follow the trail down the drain by the fence. A bit of a squeeze/climb through the fence then through the little park and on home through the streets to A.

Pleased to have finished in 1h 2m close to the hare’s prediction .. until I found out I’d run 5.6km and the fastest hasher (LIT) was sub 40m.

A few beers (no I don’t understand why I’m putting on weight either!) and Bobbledick who started 20 minutes late rolls in hardly breaking a sweat and we’re off to the on-on and some down downs …

All in all, a most awesome run!
