Anzac Day Is a day Australians and New Zealander’s use to commemorate those who died and fought in Gallipoli during World War 1. The phrase ‘Lest we forget’ came to symbolise the event and to remind the next generation never to repeat such a thing again.

The Anzac Day run 2018 was one such run that one could not forget and Indy made sure that we would never forget in the future generations of hashing.

It started with a late arriving hare so late that even WW arrived on time compared to her. It was pandemonium when Indy arrived. Hashers were bashing away mozzies just like the boys did in the muddy lands of Gallipoli. Some hashers were already shouting out that the B was Hebe haven and we hadn’t even left the A! Many were bright eyed and eager to run as they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. As the young ANZAC boys were when they took the boat naively excited to their death in Turkey. So we left A and ran on trail without a discussion of markings. Indy did mention something about a ‘crossover’ that sounded exciting we could manage that when we got there we just want to run!! So off we went.

The trail had quite a few checkbacks and kept most of us together. Then we reached a particular checkback that would soon become notorious. The trail would go up a concrete trail into the village from this checkback and so up we went then it would go up Po Le Che road and up another street wrapping around a few minor shiggy trails and then onto another concrete trail that glimpsed Hiram’s highway and wrapped around until we saw an ON ON written on a concrete block with an arrow pointing along the concrete trail and another arrow pointing up towards the pipeline shiggy... and so the confusion began... after a few steps LIT cried out ‘snake’! A few of us ran past the so called snake thinking she must be crazy it’s just a branch or a leaf.. but she was insistent it’s a snake! Anyway we all ran past the snake until CIMT saw a CB but it was written upside down and there were arrows pointing the other way... what the??... we all ran back and had to run past the snake again... this time I had a good and careful look and indeed it was a green bamboo snake sitting happily in the bush just centimetres from the runners... we ran back to the OnOn on the concrete block and thought there must be a trail between the concrete block and the backwards CB... oh dear we had to check around and eventually had to pass the snake again... but there was no alternative trail... surely Indy wouldn’t take us though virgin untouched snake and friends infested shiggy would she? Some distrusted CIMT and ran past the backwards CB and they came to same upwards concrete trail into the village we’d come across a while back. A few smart people recalled this maybe has something to do with the ‘crossover’ Indy was talking about. But we didn’t see any alternative markings but only the in trail we had run earlier. We diligently checked back and forth that trail some even tried going up the pipeline but that was not the trail. Suddenly we saw Indy in the distance and she was shouting at us and saying ‘what are you doing?’ Hopeless was telling her the markings were $@#% but she insisted no there are plenty of markings follow the trail go up the concrete trail towards the village... we declared that we had done that already but to no avail she firmly commanded ‘go up that trail and follow the markings’. So up we went again thinking perhaps she has marked off another way out as she said it was a crossover so she will come and remark the trail.

So we all obediently followed orders and went up the trail but before long Some were calling a mutiny and trying their own trails after seeing the same trail again. Dr Evil and I insisted we would fight to the finish and follow true trail and make sure that we didn’t miss anything especially Indy’s remark. So off we went following the same trail... every turn we thought maybe this was something different but no.. we had done the trail just minutes before.. we found new marking and had hope is was a new trail but no it was a checkback that the front runners had already done previously... the trail was the same. Then we suddenly came upon Tight Lips she was flabbergasted and saying she was defecting and going her own way to B she’d been running up and down villages after losing trail... we followed the trail she had just come from it was a trail that was different to what we had done... we felt hope but not for long after three blobs of flour there was a big T which TL had missed. So the trail went back to the one we’d done before back to the trail with the concrete block and the snake. I dreaded having to pass the snake again but what could we do there was no other way... back to the same concrete trail up to the village... maybe Indy had marked off the trail after we left on it the second time? Wishful thinking... no new markings we were going around again on the same trail. At this point we just reached despair... like Groundhog Day.. we would never get off this trail there was no way out!!!

Thank God I had decided to bring my mobile phone... no idea why as I never bring it.. checked google maps and looked for the suspected B of Hebe Haven. The maps took us down Po Lo Che Road. So down we ran in defiance of the markings that was leading us back on the same trail and the certain death from insanity, boredom or the snake that would have awaited us if we had taken the trail again.

Finally we pick up trail at Hiram’s highway and decide to follow the wimps as we’d had enough... part way down the road we turn into the Lions recreation centre and bump into other confused hashers who said the Rambos was another loop de loop no markings debacle... we were all back together and saw some hopeless markings and then giant markings down Hiram’s highway back to Hebe Haven where the beer, showers and blessed ANZAC cookies awaited us... ok all is forgiven after the creature comforts at B but ‘Lest we forget’ the run! This is a run that is forgiven but will never be forgotten!
