Hare - Burning Lust
Run write-up - Rooted

Thermal's FB photos

The question of the evening was: did BL really set this run himself? Yes, BL really was the sole hare. Well, with a little help from Sticky Aphid Bottom Exudate (more of which later). The only help I gave was buying chalk and Hellbank money, making sure he took it all on trail, bringing a change of clothes (he is too precious to carry all he needs), taking note of attendees … WCK was also asked for a little help – the route for the first shiggy part BL couldn’t quite be bothered to recce. So, BL a solo hare (if you don’t count the help he had).

Twenty hashers ran the trail, unfortunately not all at the same time which meant confusion for the late comers who didn’t fully understand BL’s instructions: Indy neglected to do the shortcut and An@l wilfully took the longest route possible (and missed the very large arrow that caused Indy most of her problems). Not that there wasn’t any confusion in the main pack. We’d barely gone half a Km when our way along Cheung Hang Road was blocked by a CB. After running up and down that road trying various metal staircases, an arrow was spotted heading around the fencing of the power station. This soon also culminated in a T. Back to running up and down Cheung Hang Road trying various metal staircases, thus calling into question the intelligence of the hashers. I was about to phone BL berating him for being unable to set trail when ‘on on’ was called. We headed along the power station again, but this time to the right, not left of it. Inching along by the fence, the question was repeatedly asked if anyone had seen any markings. No, was the response, but a number of front runners had gone this way and not come back.

On the pavement, we finally saw arrows and the athletic quartet of Gobi Lo, In d’Rear, Camel Driver and myself raced along the service road to try to catch the rest of the pack. For some reason, Gobi chose this moment to swap the lovely, tarmacked road for a drain cover. Stupidly, the rest of us followed her. It soon became clear, from the lack of trail marks, we should have stayed on the road. Doubling back on ourselves, we reached the Check and tried to follow the arrow. We managed to find ourselves in a river. Deciding we had taken a slight wrong turning, we went back to the Check and clambered over the railings (BL has long legs so such things to not pose an obstacle to him, for me it was akin to mounting a horse). Back on track and up some steps to get to … Cheung Hang Road. What a lot of pain and faff to find yourself only 100m from where you were 15 mins ago!

Up some steps and messing around in some shiggy by the village at the top of Cheung Hang Road, I caught up with the stragglers of the FRB group: WtFiC and SSG as they had taken a wrong route at a Check. I decided that they were good choices for my guides for the evening, though I’m sure they tried to lose me at times. Out of the shiggy and back on concrete, we plodded along Cheung Yuen Road and discovered Northern New Territories’ markings. Luckily, LSWH3 was there first, so all additional arrow markings were ours, not N2TH3’s. It was then back into the shiggy round Shek Lei Pui Fresh Water Service Reservoir. I was commenting to my companions at this point how BL had told me there was no real shiggy, it was all trail and mostly very runnable, when I noticed my guides were trying to put some distance between me and them and I had to hurry to catch up. I have no idea what might have encouraged them at that point to try to abandon me.

Anyway, it was then up to Kowloon Reception Reservoir where the Rambos went the long way round and the wimps the short way. N2TH3 markings were a little more frequent than LSWH3 markings and pointing in the wrong direction, but we were easily able to make educated guesses about which way to go. We soon reached the rejoin and the beer pool. SSG and WtFiC contemplated looking for the beer, but decided that on balance as Willy Wanka, Thermal, WCK, Gobi and Cheesy had all passed through first, they would have drunk the beer. It turns out that they did not find the beer and no one else bothered looking (some claiming not to have even noticed the beer dip pool) so it is more than likely still there if anyone finds themselves hiking in the area and in need of refreshment. Heading away from the reservoir we heard some strident voices calling ‘on on’. We knew it wasn’t LSWH3 hashers as no one calls that loudly and, moreover, it sounded like Plod. At this point we heard ‘Northern New Territories, on on!’, confirming our assumptions and spurring us to climb faster to avoid getting caught up with the other group. Luckily both N2TH3 and LSWH3 trails were going in the same direction so we were able to follow the more generous markings laid by SABE (flour and toilet paper every 20m rather than a miserly sprinkling of shredded paper every 50m). Thank you SABE!

Reaching the top, another Check and down the bamboo path with SSG winding himself on the tree (despite Thermal’s terse warning of ‘tree’ to alert following hashers). I had only heard the noise and thought there were all manner of beasts (boars, snakes, charging bears) waiting round the corner, so when I discovered it was only a tree I was not as sympathetic as I could have been to Sweaty’s plight. We were soon after on LSWH3 only trail, down some steps and back in the village, dogs barking like mad. SSG had got a little ahead of me and WtFiC at this point, but karma meant he followed an arrow into a well-known dead-end and we were all together again in our race back to A via Cheung Shan Terrace leaving only a bewildered AFWD in our wake.

Showered, changed and enjoying something alcoholic, BL was not paying much attention to his haring duties as became clear when asking who was still out on trail. He claimed nobody and that it was time to go to the bash, others of us were convinced Toilet Spray and her friend Fion were still out there. Apparently they had become confused after the village as they found themselves going back round towards the reservoirs again (having gone the wrong way on Cheung Yuen Road). They luckily realised their mistake and got back to A and even made the bash after showering just as food arrived at the table – the quickest TS has ever got changed on a hash! Considering all that could have gone wrong, the run was not as much of a disaster as it could have been.
On on!
